Below is a reflective essay on getting started with a community project I submitted to the GIG1005 Social Engagement course in April 2021. Hope you enjoy it!

It’s really fascinating that the power of technology brings us together in this pandemic period whether it is with the committee members or the participants. We are able to meet up and discuss together to make our project (conducting basic java and AI tutorial) better.

Time flies and the project will get to end within a month. I joined several java tutorial sessions during the night time. I saw quite a lot of participants are really getting into the sessions and put in a lot of effort to win the final prize. Raising a hand in Microsoft Teams is a frequent action by the participants. It’s really grateful and meaningful to see the tutorial conducted together brought some benefits to the community.

A feedback form is provided at the end of each session to have a better overview of the problem in the session. The valuable feedback will technically improve and enhance the content, passion, and performance of the participants.

Since there are quite a lot of participants that are inactive till now, so we are given a list of all the participants. I contacted two participants and the two participants have no responded until now. Then, the next day, I joined the session to check if the two participants were there, unfortunately no, so I wrote feedback that the two participants have no responded until now.

In short, I really see the community are paying attention to the technology although the basics are boring and hard to grasp. I have learned a lot of things in this community project including how we can really ask to get a reply from others, how to communicate with a beginner or an intermediate, how to self-improvise ourselves. Overall from the perspective of a student, I have developed my interpersonal skills to the next level in this project.

Putting the effort into creating more and more benefits in the community.
